I Love My Profession Because......It Fits Me

Rising to the challenge put out by Mike Mueller, in his post "What Do You Love About Your Job"? here is my "I Love My Profession Because"......

 When I graduated from college with a degree in psychology I did not have a clue what I wanted to do.  I thought perhaps I should go to graduate school but I was burned out on school so I ruled that out almost as quickly as the thought came to mind.  A friend and I decided it would be fun to live in Charleston, S C.  Why not?  That sounded like a good idea.

So we packed up and off we went on our adventure.   But I did not find a dream job.  Instead I took a job as a receptionist.  The hours and benefits were good and I had lots of free time to enjoy Charleston and all it had to offer.  It was a time for growing up.

Circumstances changed in a couple of years and I made a move to Tennessee where I worked as an executive job placement agent.  The pay and benefits were excellent but I still was not content and knew that the job was not right for me.  I felt restless.                                 

Another move brought me back to my home state of North Carolina where I worked as a mortgage loan processor for awhile.  The job brought me no joy and I was very discontent and unhappy but reluctant to make another change.

While pregnant with my daughter, at the suggestion of my Mom,  I began real estate classes and soon had my license.  I guess she knew what I should have known "that real estate was in my blood".  I grew up in a family owned and operated construction/development business.

I soon learned that once again Mom was right--from the very beginning of my real estate career I felt like I was where I belonged and doing what I was meant to do. It was a "fit".

 So what do I love about my job, my profession, my avocation?  It would take less time and space to tell you what I don't like.  But you asked for it:

  • Buyers - I love that I can help my Buyers with perhaps the most important and expensive decision and purchase of their life.  I love that they trust me, depend and rely on me and my expertise.  I love the looks and words of appreciation and satisfaction when the deal closes and they are the proud owners of their dream home.

 

  • Sellers - I love that my Sellers trust me to price, market and sell their beloved home.  I love walking through their home and yard with them and hearing the stories about their time and adventures  there.  I love the hugs of appreciation when the sale closes.  I love that I helped my fellowman.

 

  • Builders - I love working with them... choosing plans and building lots and planning a house or project.   I love that they trust and respect my opinion and ideas.


  • Mortgage loan officers - Having worked in the mortgage business, I understand what they need and expect from my clients and me.  I love to be a step ahead of them and get them what they need before they ask for it.  I love their surprise and appreciation.


  • New houses - I love the construction process.... watching the house come out of the ground, the walls go up, the roof go on, the mechanicals go in and the process of finishing with drywall, paint, trim, cabinets, etc.


  • Homes for Sale - I love showing houses to an excited family and hearing them talk about where they will place their furniture, what room each child will have and where they will put their Christmas tree.  I love their enthusiasm.


  • Education - I love learning how to improve my business, better serve my clients and the real estate industry.


  • Flexibility - As a divorced Mother, the flexibility is very important to me.  I love that I do not have to punch a time clock and that I can plan my work around my family and its needs. 


  • Independence - I love the freedom to make decisions, create my own marketing plan, make my own appointments and just take care of business in my own way. 


  • Fellow agents - I love working with fellow agents and being a team player.  I love the respect, trust, professionalism and shared goal of taking care of our clients.


  • Feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction - I love that my job gives me joy, fulfillment and a sense of worth. 


  • Opportunities - I love the opportunities that my job in real estate presents to meet new people, make new friends, work with other professionals and participate in community activities. 


  • Active Rain - I love that I stumbled upon this real estate site, that I have met so many wonderful people and shared in their successes and disappointments.  I love that members are willing to share their time, knowledge, support and expertise. 


What other profession offers all this?   I cannot imagine myself in another job.  After all, real estate is in my blood!

Be Still and Know

Getting out of town for the week-end is always refreshing and especially when the time includes a visit with family.

I had the pleasure of visiting with my brother and his family this weekend.  The only part of the trip I do not relish is the 7 hour drive.  However, it went very well with no major traffic issues.  

Very early Friday morning prior to getting on the road, I went online and found a comment on a 9/21 post of mine "Does Anyone Have An Update on Bruce Bourgault?" from Sally Cheeseman saying Bruce had passed away.  I was surprised how hard the news hit me.  Bruce was a great support to me and commented on my posts regularly.  I considered him a good friend.  His courage and spirit was a great inspiration.

I did not have much time before I had to leave town but I felt I had to do something to pay tribute to Bruce so I quickly reposted a blog which I had written in July when Bruce when going through his treatment.  He had commented many times on his desire to eat a hot dog, thus the reason for the post "Eat A Hot Dog for Fellow AR Member, Bruce".

 Over the weekend as we were enjoying our family time watching the kids play in the leaves, having meals together, talking and laughing, enjoying the kids when they dressed up in their Halloween costumes for photos;  my mind went to Bruce's family. I thought how sad and empty they must be feeling.  Those thoughts just caused me to cherish and appreciate the time we were spending with our family more. 

 

 

This morning I have been reading and trying to catch up on comments and reciprocating here on AR.  I went to Jo-Anne Smith's post (as I do daily) and there was her post "Spirit Warns You Twice, The Third Time You Stand Alone"  .  As I was reading it, the thought came to me how important it is to take time for ourselves, be quiet and listen to our spirit for there is where we find the answers to whatever we are searching for in our lives.  We are all so busy with our business, families and activities that sometimes we do not take time for reflection, mediation or prayer.  Could that be the reason for the stress and uncertainty?  I believe it is.  I believe the answers are waiting for us. -----"Be still and know".

In Memory of Bruce Bourgault

I am reposting this blog which I posted back on July 15 when Bruce was going in for surgery.  I thought it appropriate to repost it today after learning of his death. (You can see I was pretty new at this and  my calendar is not very good).

We will miss Bruce here on AR --So let's all have a hotdog for Bruce TODAY.

Let's all mark  July 25th on our calendars!  That is the day our friend and fellow ActiveRainer, Bruce Bourgault, gets to eat his hot dog. Let's all eat a hot dog that day in honor of Bruce!

In case you have not been following Bruce's story, he has been dealing with throat cancer and has a trach in place which has been there since October 2006.  He had thought maybe he was going to  get it removed on July 13th but his doctor decided to wait a little longer.  

We are all pulling for you Bruce. 

 

Drought Outlook for Onslow County North Carolina

 One of the reason is that Onslow County and Camp Lejeune use well water while many counties and cities use surface water which is at the lowest level in many years.    

 No mandatory restrictions have been placed on Onslow County or Jacksonville  residents.  Officials have just asked that citizens use water wisely.

Governor Easley has asked all North Carolinians to conserve by restricting the use of water for washing cars, watering lawns and plants.   According to the N C Department of Environment and Natural Resources 114 water systems in our state are under mandatory water conservation.  While approximately 138 water system are under voluntary restriction.

The forecast for rain within in the next few days is more optimistic than it has been in a long time.  We're hopeful.                                                                                                                                                                                          

 

9/25 UPDATE - The rain started last night and it is still raining lightly.  It is beautiful.

Haunted Houses and Strange Happenings in Onslow County North Carolina

 I came across a great website "Shadowlands Haunted Places in North Carolina".  I think there is a site for all states. 

There are stories about about haunted houses or areas and strange happenings in different towns throughout North Carolina. 

Some of the stories shared about locations in Onslow County.

  • Camp Lejeune Marine Base -The story is that when driving through the back gate of the base at night, you will see a woman in white walking along the road.  The guards in the guard shack have reported hearing many strange noises.  It is believed the woman was killed in a car accident. 
  • Jacksonville - Camp Devil Dog - One of the small wooden green hooches is rumored to be haunted.  A Marine on fire-watch ran out of the hooch screaming he saw a ghost of a small child learning over another Marine who was asleep on the floor.  The Marine reported the incident to his superiors and refused to go back in. 
  • Jacksonville - New Bridge Middle School - People have reported that sometimes on stormy days they hear banging around in the basement.  The sounds have been likened to someone trying to get out of locked doors.  Upstairs doors mysteriously close on their own.      
  • Jacksonville - Camp Geiger - Footsteps and screaming in the land navigation woods on the base right outside of Camp Devil Dog have been heard and reported by local Marines.  They relate that  sometimes, a young girl will come out to the road.  If she encounters a female, she stands and twirls her hair while looking at the ground.  But males have said when she sees them, she screams.  She is  very beautiful, with wide, bright eyes that seem to stare in the distance.   Some believe she is the young mistress of a married,military officer and was hanged because it was believed she planned to tell the wife of the officer of the affair.   It is said the loop in the noose was too wide for her small neck and she died days later from either asphyxiation or hunger.  Other say she is a body that was found in the swamp in the back woods. 
  •  Jacksonville on Highway 24 - When driving on a flat surface, it feels as though you are going down a steep hill.

We Went, We Played and We Ate --Fun at the 53rd Annual Mullet Festival, Swansboro North Carolina

I told you a couple of weeks ago about the upcoming Mullet Festival in Swansboro, North Carolina.  On Saturday I attended the 53rd annual Mullet Festival.  It is one of the longest running festival in the country.

Unfortunately, I had some issues with my camera and did not get as many photos as I had hoped to get and share. I am providing a link (city data - dsobotta) to another site which has some outstanding photos of the day and the activities. 

The weather was just perfect, a wonderful Eastern North Carolina fall day.  The day started with a parade through downtown with Swansboro's oldest native, 97 year old Margie Conder, serving as Grand Marshall.  There were beautiful floats, marching bands, scout troops, clowns and all the kinds of participants that one would expect and want in a parade.  What a way to start a glorious day. 

Food vendors along Front and Main streets offered everything from seafood and ribs to cotton candy.  Strolling along and inhaling the aroma was a delight but who could settle for the olfactory experience when the mouth was salivating for the tasty food the vendors were cooking up.   Not me, for sure.

There were beautiful arts and crafts of every imaginable kind and type and the business was brisk.  Most people seemed to be carrying a bag with a purchase of some type. 

 Carnival games and face painting seemed to be the biggest hit with the children.  They patiently waited in line  squealing with pleasure when it was their turn.

The entertainment was extraordinary Saturday and Sunday and the crowd was enthusiastic and appreciative of the musicians who willingly and graciously signed autographs, posed for photos and mingled with the festival attendees.

The sound of laughter and smiles on the faces of parents and children attested to the success of the day.

Living up to My Word - Another Great Seafood Recipe for You

OK, guys I promised to post a seafood recipe occasionally so here is another one for you.  This one is very easy, but quite impressive and delicious.  I hope you will try it and that you enjoy it. 

Lump Crab, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Basil on Angel Hair                                                 

8 oz. angel hair pasta (fresh is best, but dried will work fine)
1/2 stick butter
1/4 cup olive oil
1 cup diced peppers (a mixture of red, green & yellow)
1/4 cup sliced scallions
1/4 cup chopped, sun dried tomatoes packed in oil (drained well)
1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves)
16 oz. lump crab meat
1/2 cup dry, white wine
1/2 cup canned chicken broth
2 tablespoons fresh, chopped parsley
2 tablespoons fresh, grated Parmesan cheese

1.  Cook pasta according to package directions and while it is cooking immediately start step 2.                                

2.  Melt butter in large saute` pan add olive oil.  Next, add peppers and scallions.  Cook until vegetables begin to soften.  Add tomatoes, basil, crab, wine and broth.  Bring to a simmer and cook 2 minutes.

3.  Drain cooked pasta and scoop onto a large platter.  Spoon crab mixture and all liquids over pasta.  Sprinkle with parsley and Parmesan.

Serves 4 generously

Onslow County - One of Six N C Counties to Benefit from Influx of Troops

                                                             Good news for Onslow and six surrounding counties came on Friday, October 12 from Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue.    At a briefing with the commanding general of the Marine Corps Installations East, Lt. Governor Perdue announced that thousands of troops and their families would be moving into the area during the next five years.

Lt. Governor Perdue reminded all that the military has an $18 billion impact on North Carolina.  A Military Growth Task Force has been implemented to help the area make needed preparation for the influx of approximately 25,000 active duty Marines, civilian staff and families.  

Over the next five years, an additional 61,000 people (13.7 percent growth) are expected to move to Onslow, Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Jones, Duplin and Pender counties.  The president and CEO of North Carolina's Eastern region stated "this is the biggest announcement of economic development in North Carolina".

A Challenge - Meet and Read AR Members that You Might Have Missed

       Thanks to many of you, I recently met some AR members that I had not had the pleasure of meeting previously.  For whatever reason, our AR paths just had not crossed. 

 "If You Could Spend the Day with One AR Member, Who Would it Be?" brought many comments.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading and acknowledging the comments as well as reciprocating but the best part was...the people you introduced me to.  

I thought that during my time here I had a pretty good overview of the people here, their profiles and blogs.  WRONG!  I learned from you that there are so very many that I was not aware of but should have been.

Four of the new people that I have met are:

Denise Lones - What a vibrant and exuberant lady, a marketing/sales pro.

Chris Walker - Loves real estate and is a loyal localism guy 

David N Childress -  A Buckeye with a positive attitude

If You Could Spend the Day with One AR Member, Who Would it Be?

If you could choose to spend a day with one Active Rain member who would you choose?  A day to sit, talk, ask questions and get to know this person.

 

Tell me who you would choose, why and what you would want to discuss with this person.

There are so many interesting and diverse people here that I would love to meet, talk with and just spend time soaking in their spirit.    I am sure some of you must feel this way too.

If you can't pin it down to just one, no problem...choose as many as you want.

Failure to Succeed is No Disgrace

Recently when cleaning out a desk drawer, I found a worn, wrinkled clipping with the following quote on it

"It is not the critic who counts, nor the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows great enthusiasms, great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."
       - Theodore Roosevelt

I don't remember when I first came across this piece of wisdom and clipped it from a magazine.   I do know it has made several moves with me and somehow in the last move ended up in a desk drawer where it has rested, unread and unappreciated for too long.   

As I read and reread Roosevelt's words, the truth of it really hit home with me and how it applies to us in the real estate business in the current market  

It helps no one to

  • Criticize fellow agents, clients, mortgage companies, attorneys

  • Point out past mistakes

  • Play "would have , should have, could have or  wish I had"


The credit, indeed, belongs to the agents who

  • Do not give up

  • Project a positive attitude

  • Treat all with respect, honesty and professionalism

  • Develop and follow a sound business plan

  • Stay informed of changes in the market

  • Understand and practice the concept of  continuing education

  • Cultivate their client base

  • Keep an open mind to new ideas, marketing and technology

  • Is not afraid of:  hard work, failure and rejection






Failure to succeed is no disgrace but failure to use our talents, resources and time is wasting the gifts we have been given.

A Terrific Resource for the Electonically Challenged

I think most of you here are probably familiar with Kim Komando, America's Digital Goddess.  However, it came to my attention last week that there are some members who are not.

 Ginger Wilcox 's blog last week Mayhem & Panic Set In was about her dilemma with the death of her computer. She was seeking input on Window's Vista operating system.  I left Ginger a comment and suggested that Kim Komando would have some helpful information regarding the Vista operating system on her website.

To my surprise, Ginger  was not familiar with Kim Komando but indicated she would "Google" her. 

My purpose in telling you all of this is to give you the link to this site which offers
