Marine PCS Relocation - Real Estate Directory

Marine relocation guideAs anyone in the military or connected to the military knows, moving is a necessity and accepted way of life for military families.  But no matter how many times a family moves, it is never easy.

Working with an experienced real estate agent who specializes in military relocation will help make the move less stressful and perhaps even, pleasant.

I have compiled a list of U.S. Marine bases with the names of real estate agents who serve these bases and specialize in military family relocation.

These agents are professionals who can provide you with the information and assistance you need when moving.

They will answer your questions about schools, neighborhoods, buying or renting a home and  equip you with information about local businesses and government.

These agents understand the needs and circumstances of military families.

Each of the agents listed has a website and blogs which you can access to learn more about them.  Their blogs provide a great insight into communities, schools, recreational opportunities, restaurants, shopping, local businesses and much more. I urge you to explore their sites and blogs.

If you are relocating to a base that does not have an agent listed, please Contact me and I will help you find a qualified agent who will assist you with your relocation.   Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor, Onslow County Home Specialist 910 459 9189

Swansboro, N C... Library Events January 20 - 26, 2008

Library in Swansboro NCSwansboro, North Carolina got its first library in the early 1950s when the Women's Club of Swansboro took matters in-hand and began the Swansboro library.

Seven years later the county library system agreed to take over the operation of the library provided the Town of Swansboro would furnish a location.   An agreement was reached and the Swansboro Library became a branch of the Onslow County Public library system.

The first location of the new branch was the Old Swansboro Community Building where it remained for eleven years.  In 1968 it was moved to the Swansboro City Hall and that was its home for 28 years.

In 1993 the library moved to its present location on West Corbett Avenue into a renovated funeral home.

As the population of the area grew and the library increased its resources and patrons, a need for more space was recognized.  In December of 2001 renovations began and by March 2004, the expansion was complete.  The Swansboro Library had grown from a space of 2500 square feet to 5300 square feet.

The library is very active and offers weekly programs for children, teens and adults.

Upcoming Events - Week of January 21-26, 2008

Funny, True Story --"It's All in How You Ask"

This is a true story as related to me by my Mom that happened when she took my Grandmother for cataract surgery.

My Mom and Grandmother arrived at the hospital at the appointed time, checked in and were sent to the area  old lady where the surgery would be done.  While checking in my Mom said she noticed this white haired lady who appeared to be in her late 80's or perhaps early 90s checking in for the same surgery.

Each patient was put in a bed in a large room where the process of getting them prepared for the surgery began.  The assigned nurse began the process by making her way to each patient where she read some statements and ask the questions from the paperwork on her clipboard...upon completion, the patient signed a consent form.

As I said, all these patients were in a large, open area separated only by curtains so everyone could hear the conversation between the nurse and the patients.   Many of the patients had surrendered their hearing aids prior to this and as a result, talked very loudly.

The nurse approached the "white haired lady" and began reading and asking the questions from her clipboard.

Nurse:  "Mrs. Smith, in the case of emergency may we give you blood?"

Mrs. Smith:  "What?  Blood?  Hmm, I don't know about that".

Nurse:  "Mrs. Smith, in the unlikely situation that you would need blood, do we have permission to give you blood?"

Mrs. Smith:  "Well, I don't know about that, I'd need to discuss that with my son.  No body ever said anything about blood transfusions".

Nurse:  "Mrs. Smith, we do not anticipate any complications and it is not likely that you will need to receive blood but I am required to ask you this, and what I need from you is a 'yes' or 'no'."

Mrs. Smith - "I just don't know what to say, why didn't somebody talk to me about this?  Hmm, this is not something I expected.... I just don't know"

Nurse:  "Mrs. Smith, we cannot proceed with your cataract surgery until you answer this question"

Mrs. Smith - "I just don't know, this is really hard, I probably need to call my son".

Nurse:   "Ok, Mrs. Smith, if you are dying and the only way to save you is give you blood, do we have permission to do so?"

Mrs. Smith - "Hell, yeah!"

The room exploded with laughter.

Do We Dare Believe the Weatherman in Hubert NC? Updated 1/20/08

The weather man says we might get snow!

             Onslow County NC snow

On the coast of Eastern North Carolina, that's a big deal.  We have not had any snow in the last few years.  Well, maybe we have had some flurries but no accumulation of any kind.

My 3 1/2 year old has never seen snow and so we are gearing up for this event.

I know, I know you people in the North think we are crazy but you have to understand where we're coming from.

I grew up here on the coast of North Carolina and I can count on one hand the times in my life time that we had a significant snow...meaning more than 2 inches.

When I was a teenager a friend's family invited me to go to Florida with them for a few days during Christmas vacation.  The plan was to return home on December 24th.

Would you believe it?   The coast of North Carolina got a big snow fall (if I remember correctly, around 8-10 inches) and we could not get home for Christmas.  We were traveling on a private plane and the local airport was closed.

Not only did I miss the excitement of the snow at home, I missed Christmas Day with my family. Talk about adding insult to injury!   Actually, my family did postpone celebrating Christmas until I got home so that turned out o.k.

You can bet that if we do get snow, I will share photos with you.  Keep your fingers crossed for us.  We're waiting and watching..................................for the first snowflake.

Sunday - 1/20/08 - NO SNOW, NOT ONE FLAKE, lots of very cold rain.  :0(

What if I told you there is something you can do that is                                                             Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores NC

  • Free

  • Entertaining

  • Educational

  • Enjoyable for kids and adults

What can that be you ask?

Mayor's Inaugural Charity Ball - Swansboro North Carolina

Newly elected Swansboro Mayor, Scott Chadwick has announced with the assistance of the Swansboro Chamber of Charity Ball Swansboro North Carolina Commerce, he will begin his term with a party and everyone is invited!

The purpose of the party is two-fold:
  1. To meet and get to know the new mayor and town council members
  2. To raise money for the new Swansboro Soccer Complex.
“I’m excited about having a Mayor’s Inaugural Charity Ball,” Chadwick said. “We wanted to show the people of Swansboro a new positive approach, and show that we can work together and go out and do things, accomplish things, and show our willingness to work with people.

“I thought it would be something new and exciting and would bring people together in a social setting. I want to show people that (the town council and I) want to be accessible and approachable. We want to listen to their ideas, and I want them to hear about our visions for the town, and have a little fun,” he added.

The money will raised by the Charity Ball will help repay the debt on the new soccer complex which is scheduled for completion and ready for use this summer.

Great 911 Tribute and Video (I had not seen before)

I think we as Americans often have short memories. In my opinion, we can never be reminded too often about what happened to our country on 911.

My aunt sent me this video which I had not seen before and I think it is a great reminder and tribute. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

You must watch it to the end to get the full effect.

North Carolina - Survey Shows, American's #1 Place to Move

According to an  article by Jim Salter with the Associated Press, a study done by United Van Lines Moving Company show that Americans are moving to North Carolina at a higher rate than any other state.  The company has been conducting these studies for 31 years with proven success.

The results came from the 212,917 moves in the 48 states in 2007 and District of Columbia.

This is the second year North Carolina has come in first.

  1.  North Carolina - 61.6%
  2.  Nevada 59.4%
  3.  District of Columbia 58.5%
  4.  Oregon 58.4%
  5.  Alabama 57.9%

Why is North Carolina such a popular destination?  The obvious answers:

1.  The Weather - North Carolina has four distinct seasons, none of which are severe.  The coastal area's mild winters are short with average low January temperatures in the mid 30's.

2.  Property Taxes - Compared to other areas, property taxes are very favorable.  For those retiring to North Carolina, here is a great resource to learn more about the state income and property taxes.

3.  Diversity - Each area of the state has its own unique attractions and events.

  • The Coast - America's best beaches                 North Carolina beaches
  • North Carolina Aquariums
  • North Carolina Birding Trail
  • Wright Brothers Memorial

Mystery Surrounds Missing Pregnant Camp Lejeune Marine - Last Updated 1/11/08 9:02 PM

Why the delay in reporting this woman's disappearance?  That seems to be the question on locals' minds.

A young, pregnant marine stationed at Camp Lejeune Marine base in Jacksonville, N C is missing.

Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach has not been seen or heard from since December 14.  She was due to testify about an incident she had witnessed on base according to her mother who reported her missing on December 19 after not hearing from her daughter for several days.   The mother said Maria normally called him frequently.

Lance Cpl. Lauterbach's cell phone and car have been found.  Local authorities and the SBI are investigating.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

For more details read this AP report.

Update - 1/11/2008 - 12:45 PM

In a news conference around noon today, Onslow County North Carolina sheriff,  Ed Brown, confirmed that a key witness has provided information that Lance Cpl. Lauterbach is dead and buried.

It is believed she is buried in a shallow grave off Gum Branch Road in Jacksonville.  A team is now searching for the grave.

Sheriff Brown indicated that it is believed she died between December 14 and 20.

The suspect is the Marine accused of sexually assaulting Ms.Lauterbach to which news releases had referred to as "an incident she was due to testify about". Authorities have spoken with the suspect's attorneys but not with the suspect.

9:01 PM

Detective have found what appears to be burnt human remain in a fire pit in the yard of the accused Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean.  Authorities plan to continue digging and scrapping the area tomorrow morning.

New Year's Day Polar Plunge with Clients

I am so fortunate that many of my clients become friends and neighbors.  A couple, whom I sold a house to about a year ago, invited my daughter and me to their New Year's Day Brunch and Polar Plunge.

The invitation read "bring a salad or dessert and your swim suit".

January 1st 2008 was a marvelous Eastern North Carolina day in Hubert, N C with the temperature very much above our average normal January high of 54.   Even so, I knew the water would be too cold for me to go in.

We arrived around noon to find lots of familiar faces, neighbors and good food.

Much of the conversation was about the unseasonal warm weather and the upcoming dip in the pool.  My 3 1/2 year old kept saying she wanted to go swimming to which I replied that the water was too cold and we didn't bring our swim suits.  She was not convinced.

At the appointed time, fireworks that sounded like a siren were set off and the "polar bears" dived in.  They swam the length of the pool, climbed out, quickly wrapped their cold bodies in large towels and announced that the water was freezing cold.

My little one still was not convinced and continued to beg to go in.  Someone suggested that I take off her shoes and let her dip a foot in thinking that would take care of the issue.  Ok, why not?  So, we removed the shoes and socks, she put a foot in the water, looked up at me and said "It's not cold, I want to get in".

What's a Mother to do?  I stripped her down to her shirt and panties and said "go in".  She walked to the edge of the pool, down the steps into the pool until the water was above her waist and stood there shivering.  I insisted she come out and turned around to get a towel to wrap her in.  When I turned back around.... lo and behold she was back in the pool.

I finally got her out, dried off, wrapped up and she was still insisting that she wanted to swim some more.

Was this really my child?  This tough, little girl.   Yes, I love the water but only when it reaches about 85 degrees!   It appears I have a little polar bear.

Try My Green Enchiladas

I haven't posted a recipe in awhile so I thought I would post the recipe for the dish I am making for dinner tonight.  Also I have to uphold my reputation as the "recipe lady" as Jennifer Fivelsdal has named me.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we do. (Great  and sneaky way to get spinach in your kids)

green enchiladasThis is quick, easy, good and makes a lot.... you might want to halve the recipe (I do) or make the entire recipe and freeze half for later.

Green Enchiladas

Filling

6 boneless chicken breast cooked, and cut in bite size pieces

1 medium onion, chopped

12 oz. sharp, shredded cheddar cheese

12-15 flour tortillas

Mix together cooked chicken pieces, chopped onion and most of shredded cheese (reserve some for topping)  Fill tortillas, roll up and place in baking dish and top with sauce.

Sauce

1 package frozen, chopped spinach

2 cans cream of mushroom soup

1 can chopped green chilies (2, if you like it really spicy)

16 oz. sour cream

Cook spinach per package directions and drain well (I squeeze out the water).  Combine with remaining sauce ingredients and pour over filled tortillas.  Top with reserved cheddar cheese.

Bake in 350 degree oven 30 minutes.
