Attention: Onslow County Parents-- New Immunization Requirements for Students

This is an important message for all North Carolina parents of school age and college  NC School Immunization Requirements students.

Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, new immunization requirements will be     enforced.  The news media has done a good job of spreading the message in North Carolina.

But, if you are relocating to Camp LeJeune Marine Base, New River Air Station or Naval Hospital at Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina;  you may not be aware of the new requirements.

Or perhaps you are buying a new home in Hubert, Swansboro, Richlands, Maysville or Jacksonville North Carolina...... the word may not have reached you.

The rule change goes into effect beginning with the 2008-2009 school year which begins in August 2008.

A booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine and a second dose of mumps vaccine.

The new rule states that a booster dose of Tdap vaccine is required for the following individuals:

  • All students attending public school who are entering the 6th grade on or after August 1, 2008, if five years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid.
  • All students not attending public schools (i.e., private, home-school, non-traditional schools) who are 12 years of age on or after August 1, 2008, if five years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid.
  • Individuals enrolling in college or university for the first time on or after July 1, 2008, if a tetanus/diphtheria toxoid or tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine has not been administered within the past 10 years.

Regarding the change  for the mumps vaccination.

Students are now required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine before enrolling in school, college or university for the first time. However, any child entering school prior to July 1, 2008 is not required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine. Children were previously required to have only one dose of mumps vaccine. Most children already receive two doses of the MMR vaccine (measles-mumps-rubella) by age four. Therefore, this rule will primarily affect children who received single  dose of the vaccines.

Since these vaccinations are required, students will be able to receive the booster dose of Tdap and the second dose of mumps free.  Parents should set up an appointment with their child’s doctor or local health department to receive the immunization prior to the beginning of school. The vaccine will be free-- however, the doctor may charge a fee.

For more information about the immunization rule change, visit www.immunizenc.com or contact your doctor or the  local health department, or the Immunization Branch at 919-707-5550.

"Be Who You Are and Say What You Feel"

Recently when making a comment on JoAnne Smith's post "Leading a Principled Life", I referred to one of my
Be Who You Are favorite Dr. Suess' quotes.  "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind".

I grew up with Dr. Suess books and because of my love for them, I read them to my  daughter often....she loves them too.  These books may be written  for children but the messages are for everyone.

What a powerful, poignant and true statement this is and a lesson for agents.  I believe that in order to best serve our clients, we must first be true to ourselves.

"Be who you are" - What does that mean? I believe it means being true to our own principles and beliefs.   As professionals, we are very adaptable and capable of dealing with many different personalities and types.  But,  I believe as agents we must understand that we cannot be all things to all people.  There are sure to be people whose personalities and morals clash with ours. Working for and with them would not be in anyone's best interest.  When this happens, the honest and honorable thing to do is inform them that we do not feel we can work with and/or for them.

"Say what you feel" - As a Realtor, I cannot and should not voice opinions but I am obligated to  abide by the law and the higher moral standards of a Realtor and uphold the Realtor's Code of Ethics which is "to protect and promote my client's interest while treating all parties fairly".

"Those who mind don't matter" - Anyone who objects or has issues with the way I conduct my business (honestly, professionally and ethically) are those I do not need to represent or work with.

"Those who matter don't mind" - Clients, fellow agents, lenders and other professionals who practice the Golden Rule in their lives and business appreciate and understand the way I

  • Refrain from exaggeration, misrepresentation or concealment of pertinent facts

  • Cooperate with other professionals to advance transactions to the best interest of my clients

  • Make my true position known in all transactions

  • Give equal representation to all clients

Take a lesson from Dr. Suess.....  "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind".
