Marine Corps HeadquartersSince Quantico Marine Corps Base first opened its doors in 1917 it has taken on the role of not only being the “Crossroads of the Marine Corps” but also the “Frontline of Innovation” for the Marines. As you drive through the gates of Quantico you can’t help but realize how many important enlisted and officers of the Marine Corps have also passed through those gates and under the Welcome to Quantico Sign.

Marine Corps UniversityDrive past the Marine Corps University complex where officers attend both OCS and advanced training at among others the War College or enlisted marines attend leadership training at the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy and you can see the emphasis that the Marine Corps places on training and education. Wander throughout the base and you will see the blend of old and new as the base continues to prepare for the movement of new military and civilian jobs as part of BRAC. Enjoy a stop along the way to take in the Potomac River views and if you are a golferPotomac River at Quantico make a reservation for a round or two.

Quantico MCB contains the only town in the US (Quantico Town) actually contained within a military base. Though the town is small it does contain homes, a marina, plenty of restaurants, shops and VRE station. Marine Corps life and history are evident just outside the gates of Quantico as well. With the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps Cemetery both located minutes from the gate. If you are looking for a little more adventure without as much Semper Fi then take some time and enjoy Prince William Forest Park at the same time.

Globe and Laurel

Once you are done with your tour of the area stop by the Globe and Laurel Restaurant. The place is usually packed with fellow Marines, both young and old. With the planned widening of Route 1 the current restaurant may have to make a move but rest assured you will still feel like you are part of the family no matter where they go. If you need help with finding housing while you are stationed at Quantico give me a call. Marines stationed at Quantico have plenty of choices. Both Prince William County and Stafford County provide a wide variety of neighborhoods that Marines like to call home.

Onslow County NC Hurricane Evacuation with Pets

Pet owners in Onslow County and other coastal counties are sometimes very pets surprised and much distressed to learn that in the event of a hurricane and the need to evacuate, most evacuation shelters do not allow pets.

This puts pet owners in a dilemma----stay and ride out a storm in a location that is apt to flood and be in harm's way or evacuate and leave the pet behind. What an awful decision to have to make---neither option is a good one.

Thanks to Congress--- after Hurricane Katerina, the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) was passed and each state must now include certain animals in their evacuation plans in order to receive federal funding.

West Johnston High School located at 5935 Raleigh Road in Benson, Johnston County North Carolina has been named as the stopping point for people (and pets) evacuating the Southeast coast of North Carolina which includes Onslow, New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties. This location can accommodate approximately 3000 people and 500 animals.

You will want to print this out and keep it in your hurricane survival kit so when the time to evacuate comes, you will have the location and information at your finger tips.

Kitsap Peninsula | Relocation Package | Bremerton, Silverdale, Naval Base Kitsap | The Journey Begins

I have learned much from Jo Soss and her relocation posts.  As a military spouse, she understands what kind of information military families need and want.

I want to grow up to be just like Jo Soss.

Jo can assist you with your relocation Kitsap Peninsula and I am here to assist you when you relocate to Camp LeJeune Marine Base, New River Air Station or Naval Hospital at Camp LeJeune.

Via Jo Soss | Bremerton WA Real Estate:

Welcome to the Beautiful Kitsap Peninsula located on what is called "West Puget Sound" of Puget Sound which lies between the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges in Washington State. Surrounded by 236 miles of salt water shoreline and views you can only describe as "wow" you begin your journey to the new place you are going to call home.

Traveling to the area can be done from the newly redesigned Tacoma Narrows Bridge or from the remarkable Washington State Ferry system. No matter which route you choose you will be amazed at the water, at the beauty and you will know that what others have said is true...."this is God's Country".

The area offers some of the best views of mountains and water as well as some of the best boating and recreational opportunities in the Greater Puget Sound Area. Within a mile radius you have several attractions and facilities to visit and explore. Welcome to the Kitsap Peninsula.

Relocation should be an adventure, an experience, something to cherish and document. Starting a new life in a new area can be the most exciting time of someone’s life. Over the last several years I have relocated several times, from the West Coast to the East Coast and back to the West Coast. I have driven to Alaska on relocation from the Mojave Desert of California. I know that if you don't plan and prepare it can be a very scary time.

When you begin your journey choose some type of "theme" to make the adventure memory filled. You might choose to collect something (I collected spoons and one trip shot glasses) from every state if you are moving cross county. Another theme could be to document through pictures or video the different gas prices across a state or across the country. You could count the different types of cars you see and snap a photo at each one as you drive on by. These are the fun projects that I have done. I have traveled thru 38 of our Great States on different relocations. I have seen small town America up close and I have seen the city lights of New York City and have loved it all!! I turn my relocations into an experience that I can remember and share with others.

Waterfront Home in Hubert, NC---What's Missing?

So you bought a beautiful, new waterfront home in Hubert N C on Queens Creek, the  Waterfront home Hubert NC furniture has been moved in, you've unpacked and the family is pretty much settled into a new life and routine in your lovely new Hubert N C home.

You've visited the schools that the kids will be attending in Swansboro which are only about a 10 minute drive from the neighbhorhood and all are pleased with that as it means everyone gets to sleep a little later on school days.  And there's the Day Care center for the little ones, Mom is pleased and comfortable with it.

Swansboro NC The restaurants and shops on the waterfront in Swansboro are all and more than you anticipated.  The boutiques and gift shops will provide hours of entertainment and shopping pleasure especially for  Mom and the girls.  You can't wait until your "inland friends" visit so you can take them to one of the local restaurants for some of the fabulous local crab, shrimp, clams and fish.

Dad's commute to Camp LeJeune Marine Base is short and convenient, that makes him happy.  The airport and interstate highway is a short drive away which makes out of town trips easy.

So what's missing?  Oh, I bet I can guess.........a boat and boat dock.  Sorry, I can't help
boating Hubert NC you with the boat but I do have some very important information about the boat dock.   Hold on don't order the lumber and nails yet.  Before you start construction, you must have a permit.  Actually, you probably will need two permits.

So where do you begin and what do you need to do?  Your first stop should be the Onslow County Building and Planning Department.  It is located at 118 Old Bridge St. in Jacksonville.  The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and will answer your questions and assist you in making the necessary applications.  A CAMA (Coastal Area Management Act) permit is required for most any type of activity that occurs over and/or in any body of water in the 20 North Carolina counties regulated by CAMA.    For more information check out CAMA's webesite and  Will My Project Require a Permit?

Now where is the phone book?  Let's see "boat dealers" ....yeah, it's time to go BOAT SHOPPING!
